ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, England vs Afghanistan: Afghanistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, has been officially rebuked for breaching level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in their win against England. Gurbaz was found to have violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.” He received a single demerit point, his first offense within a 24-month period. The incident occurred in the 19th over of Afghanistan’s innings, right after his dismissal.
Gurbaz expressed his frustration by forcefully striking his bat against the boundary rope and a nearby chair. Taking accountability for his actions, Gurbaz admitted the offense and agreed to the penalty proposed by Jeff Crowe, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As a result, no formal hearing was necessary.
The ICC Code of Conduct
The ICC Cricket Code of Conduct serves as a set of regulations governing the behavior of professional cricket players. Historically, cricket has upheld a standard of “gentlemanly” conduct from its participants. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is responsible for formulating and enforcing this code. Under these regulations, players can face fines proportionate to their salary, match suspensions, or even bans lasting several years or for life. For each Test match, One Day International, and Twenty20 game, the ICC designates a match referee who holds the authority to impose penalties for most offenses, except the gravest ones.
The most severe violations, carrying the harshest penalties, fall into the following general categories:
- Gambling on matches (betting).
- Intentionally underperforming in a match in exchange for benefits like money or goods (match-fixing).
- Encouraging another player to engage in either of the aforementioned actions.
- Neglecting to report specific incidents related to match-fixing or gambling.
- Other offenses linked to these serious breaches of conduct.
