Eng Vs NZ Head-to-Head ODIs Matches Played in India:

England and New Zealand have faced off in a solitary ODI match in India. This clash occurred during the 1996 World Cup, coincidentally hosted at the Narendra Modi Stadium. New Zealand emerged victorious in that game, securing an eleven-run win. Now, it’s England’s turn to level the score at this venue.

Eng vs NZ | 2019 Cricket World Cup Final Controversy

A pivotal moment in the thrilling World Cup final showdown between England and New Zealand was the crucial overthrow that occurred on the fourth ball of the final over delivered by Trent Boult. Requiring nine runs from three balls to secure their first-ever men’s World Cup title, England received an unexpected opportunity when a throw from Martin Guptill ricocheted off Ben Stokes and sped to the third man boundary. Stokes, having played the ball to deep midwicket and dived to complete a second run, had not intentionally interfered with the ball.

Despite his sincere apologies to the New Zealand players, the overthrow runs were destined to be counted. The only uncertainty lay in whether five or six runs should be added to England’s total. After extensive discussions with his fellow umpire, Kumar Dharmasena confirmed six runs—a combination of four runs for the overthrow and two runs the players ran. Social media and experts have been split on whether the hosts should have been credited with five runs or six.

However, neither of the captains—Eoin Morgan of England nor Kane Williamson of New Zealand—addressed this matter during the post-match press conference.

Upon reviewing the television replays, it became evident that Stokes and non-striker Adil Rashid had not completed the second run when Guptill released the ball from the mid-wicket fence. At that moment, Stokes was still short of his crease when the ball struck his bat and went to the boundary. The ambiguity arises from the definition of ‘act’ in the mentioned rule, and it remains unclear if the ball hitting Stokes’ bat can be considered one such ‘act.’

However, based on the final decision made by the two on-field umpires, it appears to be the case for now. Until the International Cricket Council provides an official clarification regarding the specifics of the discussion on the field, there will be ongoing debate about the interpretation of this rule.

Renowned former ICC umpire Simon Taufel has joined the debate, asserting that Kumar Dharmasena and Marais Erasmus made an incorrect decision:  “They (England) should have been awarded five runs, not six,” Taufel is quoted as saying by foxsports.com.au. “It’s a clear mistake … it’s an error of judgment. In the heat of what was going on, they thought there was a good chance the batsmen had crossed at the instant of the throw. Obviously TV replays showed otherwise.”
