Historic Moment in African Cricket: Uganda Qualify for ICC T20 World Cup

Having secured five victories in six games, Uganda has guaranteed a top-two placement in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier, earning their qualification for the T20 World Cup 2024 set to take place in West Indies and the USA.

During the qualifier, Uganda started on a positive note by defeating Tanzania with ease in their opening match, securing an eight-wicket victory. Nevertheless, in the subsequent game, an exceptional performance by Namibian all-rounder David Wiese, who claimed 4 wickets for 17 runs, resulted in Uganda facing a six-wicket loss.

In an impressive display, the African team bounced back by securing a notable five-wicket victory against the Test-playing Zimbabwe side. Captain Sikandar Raza’s resilient 48 not out stood out for his team, but Uganda’s bowlers, notably Dinesh Nakrani with figures of 3/14, played a crucial role in limiting the Chevrons to a total of 136/7. In a remarkable cricketing upset, the Cricket Cranes secured a noteworthy victory, chasing down the target with five wickets to spare, guided by the contributions of Riazat Ali Shah, who scored 42, and Alpesh Ramjani, who added 40 to the team’s total.

Buoyed by this performance, the team then comfortably defeated Nigeria and clinched a 33-run victory over Kenya, putting them in a strong position to secure a spot in the T20 World Cup. They solidified their position with a convincing nine-wicket triumph over Rwanda. Displaying an outstanding bowling performance, they dismissed Rwanda for a mere 65 runs. The target was then efficiently chased down by the ninth over.
